omg! why didn't i know that it's march already? i totally thought we had feb 29 and 30 -_-
having realized that. i suddenly have a lot to do, starting off with dling and burning mp3s of children's songs for the forum tomorrow, requested by my stepmom. bcoz of that i'm using the pc instead of the laptop today. the problem is i don't know a lot of children's songs nice enough for a formal gathering so i am stuck T_T
i also have to go to the clinic i'm gonna work for as a reliever for 15 days tomorrow to see the person i'm gonna cover for before she leaves. the bad part is this month started off with my period, but the 2nd day is the most painful T_T now i feel nauseous and weak and nervous. my tummy area feels unusually warm, my whole lower abdomen and back region is painful and my head feels (like it's emitting heat) the way it usually does this time of month =_=
woke up early bcoz my dad asked me to help around the house bcoz they have visitors. it's weird taking a bath earlier than i usually do. at the end of the day i just feel like taking a bath again -_-
read that pi (with shirota yuu) went to jin's solo live concert for the second time to annoy jin. and this is the part that made my day: the first time pi went, he was with kusano. after the show pi dropped kusano at a street corner *kyaaaaa* KusaPi is alive!!!
been listening to kylee's song for 2 nights. there's a facebook account for 'memoirs of a teenage amnesiac' by the director hans canosa and he actually replies to the comments. of course i'm not really sure if he's the real thing (i think he is). the things he said about tegoshi was really nice:
I really hope that they will come to LA for a screening. There's been some discussions of screenings in other countries to which the actors would be invited. I want the actors to gain as much of an international profile as they can. Yuya is terrific in the movie, and he should be in more movies!
I think there might be a mob scene if they do get to come to LA but trust that I will fight my way through it to see Tegoshi! I watched him first in My Boss My Hero and he was basically the sole reason my eyes were opened up to the world of Japanese dramas and idols. I've been following him since 2006/2007 so to see how far he's come by getting a big international release is a huge hope of mine. If I may ask, what was it about him that made you cast him?
I thought his charisma as a pop star was incredible. I also loved the quality of his voice. The character of Mirai is very intelligent and speaks very fast and with a quirky vocabulary. Yuya is so talented performing with his voice. He was able to capture the emotion of the character and speak this unique dialogue beautifully.
When production sound isn't usable on movies, we do recording of some dialogue in post production (ADR). Yuya was the best actor in ADR that I have ever seen. He amazed all of the technicians in the room, because he has perfect audio recall of lines and takes that he'd done months before. We were able to get almost all of his ADR lines and voiceover lines in one take. A wonderful talent.
Wow that does sound impressive! Haha I'd like to see that on the DVD extras when it comes out too, but that might just be the fangirl in me speaking. I was also curious as to how his English was? I'd read in an interview translation that he'd been getting coaching, so I wonder how far his speaking has come since his Miso Soup days. ^_^
He really surprised me with his great performance. I knew from seeing his other work that he had potential to be great, but he was even better than I thought he could be. On set, the women in my crew divided into three sets: those who loved Mirai (Yuya), Yuji (Kenichi) or Ace (Anton). But if you've read the book, you know what's special about Mirai... -------------
I'm happy to hear that you are looking forward to the movie!
We're pretty much gearing up for the Japanese release first, but we've been fortunate to have interest from distributors all over the world. This makes me really happy, because I love all of my young stars. I want Maki, Kenichi and Yuya and all of the terrific Japanese actors in the film to be seen by audiences everywhere. They are all so good in this movie!
I love them all so much, I have to say something about each of my lead actors:
MAKI - I asked Maki to do so much in this film. The entire movie is told through her point of view, and she's in every scene. She had to do wire/stunt work, play tennis, cut her own hair in one long take, play a drunk scene, and not inconsiderably speak and act in English. She is such an amazing professional, she just did everything I asked, no matter how difficult. She is so open and vulnerable and pure in this film. I've screened it for film industry people in New York and Los Angeles, and the audiences all love her. I've had producers and agents asking how they can cast her in their movies. Of course I want her to have an international career, but in some ways I wish I could keep her as my own secret weapon! She's just so good.
KENICHI - I've said many times in interviews that I had to learn the Japanese word for genius to describe Kenichi. He is such an instinctual and brilliant actor, and yet is able to maintain the purity and playfulness of a child. He is one of the best actors I've ever worked with, and I've worked with hundreds of actors in theater and in film. Love him.
YUYA - Yuya will surprise even his fans with his performance in this movie. He hasn't been in as many films as his co-stars, but he gives a movie star performance as Mirai. He's so charismatic, fun and sweet in this role. This is his best acting ever on film (or video). If he wants to do it, he could have a huge film career after people see him in this movie. But I've been to a NEWS concert (New Years, 2009) and I know how much his music fans love him. So I hope that he keeps doing both.
ANTON - He's been working since he was a kid, but Anton hasn't developed any bad habits like child actors often do. When I saw him in his first movie, I knew that he was special and I told everyone around me that I had to work with him. When I met him, he told me how much he loved Japan and had always wanted to visit. It was my great honor to be able to provide him with his first trip to Japan to star in the movie with these other great actors.
This is the longest comment I've ever written anywhere, but I just can't contain how much enthusiasm and love I have for these actors. They worked so hard to make a film that their fans would love. I hope you all do!
And as we decide who distributes the movie where and when, we'll update you here and on the darekiss website too.
about the supporting cast:
You asked how we cast the supporting cast members, particularly the international school students. Since the movie was 95% shot in Tokyo (except for the scene where Maki and Kenichi's characters go to Los Angeles, which was shot there), we did all the casting out of Tokyo in the weeks of pre-production. It was actually very difficult to find English speaking actors for the international school student roles, but we ended up with a very solid supporting cast. I believe that every role should be cast as if that character is the lead in their own movie--every role is important. That's one of the reasons I brought Emma Roberts over to play the role of Alice. I wanted to give her a challenge to play the kind of role she'd never played before. Audiences will be surprised to see Emma playing a very cool and kooky character in a way they've never seen her before.
My Japanese co-producer, Ash Nukui, had many wonderful ideas of casting. As we started thinking about this project, he showed me hundreds of Japanese movies and TV dramas. He has great taste. I met dozens of actors, but I was so fortunate that I was able to cast my first choice for every role.
I knew that Maki was the perfect Naomi for several reasons. First, she was completely candid and honest with me when we met. She didn't try to be respectful or impress me. She was herself, she answered all of my questions honestly, and she was passionate and engaged. Second, I thought that she had a quality and a look that would appeal not only to Japanese and Asian audiences but to Western audiences as well. I've always loved international films and stars, and I've always wanted to introduce international stars to audiences from other countries. I loved working with Maki. If she wants to, I'm sure she will work in the U.S. and other places because of her great performance in this movie.
She's very young, but I wish more actors were like her. So talented, and so committed to her work. She's a great role model.
Just before we shot the movie, I attended Maki's 20th birthday party with a couple hundred people from the Japanese film industry. It was really amazing to me that someone so young could have accomplished so much. But more than just having a lot of credits, she can really deliver terrific performances when she's got a great script. It was really an honor to work with her.
The concert was in Tokyo Dome. It was amazing to see the energy of these guys on stage, and the waves of love coming off the fans. I got to meet the whole band backstage after the show. Since I watch so many Japanese films and TV dramas, I was able to tell all the other guys how much I enjoyed their dramatic work in addition to the fun concert I'd just seen!
I can say that I am a great admirer of the book. Also, Gabrielle Zevin, the novelist, wrote the screenplay. So the movie is very faithful in spirit to the book. However, Gabrielle has written quite a few screenplays, and she's take a harder line on making changes than I do! I can tell you, though, that any fan of the book will be a fan of the movie.
I don't know about the memo book and yearbook releases in U.S., but I think they look cool.
And no problem about the questions, it's my pleasure to answer. I was a big fan of all of these actors before I cast them, so talking to other fans is fun! -------------
I watched over& over the trailers, the scenery is beautiful and the feel is somehow different to usual jpnese movies. I find it really refreshing. Kylee's song is definitely a plus ♥ I saw the scene where Naomi cut her hair, it's so cuteee. There's not many jpnese films that make to release here, unfortunately. Fans have to wait for DVD, either they order directly from Japan, either wait for french version (for very popular ones) and it takes a long time.. That makes me think, I hope Darekiss DVD will provide english subtitle XD
There will be English subtitles on the DVD. I recently reviewed the subs they made.
Maki cut her hair in one long take. We only had the time and the budget for her to do it once. The shot is supposed to be a direct point of view in a mirror. But because it's direct POV, Maki was looking into the camera pretending that it was a mirror. It amazes me that she was able to cut her hair, BLIND, as well as any professional stylist. And she'd never done it before! Incredible.
--------------------
i even saw one of my friends' post asking him if they would consider showing it in the philippines and he said they've had discussions about it. i'll pray like i've never prayed before to make them change their minds! i guess it's time for japanese artists to be more recognized here. i'm getting tired of all the korean mania.
hans also said that there is an american version of 'memoirs' under way and he's one of the producers.
new clip. a little interview with maki, matsuken and anton:
26 days to go until the movie release!!! can't wait!
for anyone who is a fan of maki, matsuyama kenichi, and tegoshi yuya and want to support the movie or want it released in your own country, you can make a simple post in here and maybe this would convince TOEI to release it in more countries (the philippines included, i'm praying), GO HERE: DareKiss on facebook
